Week of June 11th

Food Inquiry: How can we sort food?
This week we read the book "Food Parade", which introduced the class to the 5 different Food Groups (Dairy, Vegetable, Fruits, Grains, Proteins). Students were then challenged to see if they could group/sort food in any different ways. They found pictures of food in flyers to add to each group.

Some of the grouping/sorting rules included:
- shape
- colour
- food group
- healthy or unhealthy

Food Inquiry: Graphing our Favourite Food Group
Students participated in a whole group graph by selecting their favourite food group and adding it to our graph on the Promethean Board. Once enough data was collected, students shared what the graph taught them (i.e., which was the more favourite food group, how many people participated)

Food Inquiry: Word Searches
Students took the initiative for their learning by asking me to print off food word searches!

How many snack lids did we collect this year?
Some students were wondering how many snack lids we collected this year. So I told the class there was only one way to find out...COUNT!! First we looked at the bin of snack lids and made some predictions. Students then worked in small groups using the 100's chart to count all of the snack lids. On the first day we counted 298. The next day I found another bin of lids hiding on the Loose Parts Play shelf so on the second day we counted over 350! Next week we will discuss the environmental impact of this many snack lids.

Week of May 28th

Graphing

Students created their own graphs this week. They first came up with a question for their graph (i.e. what is your favourite colour, what is your favourite season). Next, they collected data by surveying their classmates. Finally, they displayed their results in a graph and then discussed their findings (i.e. which option had the most/least)

Creative Corner

This week students explored stamping with paper towel rolls and paint. They used some pre-cut paper towel rolls as well as cutting this own rolls into different shapes to see which unique shapes they could create.

Name Recognition with Playdough

Students practiced recognizing and spelling their classmates names. They compared the length, as well as noticed similarities and differences between their friends names.

Unit of Inquiry: Food

Our new Unit of Inquiry is in full swing! After discussing as a class, we decided that many students were interested in learning about food and healthy eating. Students spent time looking at books, sharing what they already know about food and began asking questions and coming up with wonderings.
