Week of March 19th

Creative Corner

Students enjoyed observing the orchid we have in our classroom. They used pencils, permanent markers and water colour paint to replicate the details. With spring around the corner, students will have the opportunity to create with many other natural items.

This week we also started a creation using fabric, a water/glue mixture and bowls or balloons. Stay tuned to see what the final product is!

Literacy

This week I was awfully hungry and asked the students if they could make me some "Sight Word Soup". Many students took on this challenge and used the Word Wall or words hiding in their head to make me the most delicious soup at the water table!

Spring Inquiry

With Spring officially beginning this week, we took some time to brainstorm and discuss what we already know about Spring and compared it to other seasons. Students came up with many interesting facts about the changes we see and are very excited that we won't have to wear our snow gear much longer!

Students began creating their own Spring bingo cards this week by colouring, cutting and pasting spring images. Next week we will get to play with them.

Community Inquiry

We are continuing to inquire into the community we live in. This week we used Google maps and looked at the different parts of a map and how maps can help us. We also brainstormed different buildings and parts in our community, as well as what keeps us safe.

There are numbers in our community.

Week of February 26th

10 Black Dots
After reading the book 10 Black Dots by Donald Crews, we had some surprise Grade 8 students from Mr. McMillian's class came to visit and help us create our own dot drawings. Students incorporated anywhere from 1-10 dot stickers in their drawings. After their drawing was complete, they enjoyed some quiet reading time.

The next day, students used the Promethean Board to create pictures using dots.

The Message Fairy
This week the class received an email from The Message Fairy saying she was too busy to write The Morning Message. She asked the class if they would be up for the challenge of writing their own messages and sharing them with the class. Many students took on this challenge with great excitement, some choosing to work independently and some in partners!

Day of Pink

On Wednesday, we celebrated Day of Pink. As a class we brainstormed what was special about this day and why it is important to wear pink. We watched a short movie about how Day of Pink began as well as read the book My Princess Boy by Cheryl Kilodavis.

Community Inquiry

We began an inquiry into our community/neighbourhood this week. We took advantage of the beautiful weather and went on a walk. Students were challenged to find as many numbers as they could. Next week we will discuss the importance of these numbers followed by looking at the different buildings in our community and their purposes.
