Creative Corner: Windblown

After reading the story Windblown by Edouard Manceau, students had the chance to use 7 different shapes from the book and their imagination to create their own animals.

Unit of Inquiry: Materials
This week we began a Unit of Inquiry about Materials. Students shared what they already know about different materials and began to come up with many questions and wonderings.

Art with Ms. Lupita

This week we started a special art project with artist Ms. Lupita. Here is a sneak peak of the artwork that will be showcased at our Art Show and Holiday Concert on December 13th.

Week of November 13th

Cooperative Activities

This week, students participated in a variety of learning opportunities to practice their teamwork, turn-taking and cooperation skills. This upcoming week we will discuss in more depth, what works and what doesn't work when working with friends.

Library Visit

It was a dark and cloudy day during our trip to the Library this week so Mrs. Jong decided to read us some stories about colour! Students enjoyed guessing the upcoming rhyming words and what colours would be made when mixed together. She then showed the class a video of Harold and the Purple Crayon.

Book Making

Many students self-initiated a Book Making Centre this week. Some of the topics included Squirrels, Family, Butterflies and The Alphabet.

Adding pictures after the words are complete.

Squirrels hibernate. Squirrels collect nuts.

Creating our co-constructed calendar book

Each day, the Special Helper draws a picture about something we did that day. At the end of each month we will be adding all of the days to our Room 7 Calendar Book. Students practiced reading and writing the months of the year, the days of the week and the numbers on the calendar to add to our book.

Week of November 6th

Field Trip to the Fire Hall

Everyone really enjoyed our trip the Fire Hall on Wednesday.
Before going, the class came up with many great "wonderings".

Some included:
- How many firetrucks will be there?
- Will there be a fire dog?
- How old are the firefighters?
- Why do they want to be firefighters?

Thank you so much to the parents who were able to volunteer on this trip! :)

Literacy

This week we practiced printing the letter Cc. We noticed that both the uppercase C and lowercase c look the same and are written the same way, but the difference is their size. We also discussed the "Magic c". This magic letter turns into certain lowercase letters (o, q, d, g, s, a).

To form both uppercase and lowercase Cc:
- Start at the top.
- Curve down.
- Stop.

Many students chose to write about the first snow fall during Journal Writing this week.

Remembrance Day

This week we discussed the importance of Remembrance Day and the class was read A Poppy is to Remember by Heather Patterson. Students thoughtfully created poppies using Loose Parts Play materials.

First Snow Fall

Students were very excited about the first snow fall of the season! We will be working with students over the next few weeks on different strategies for getting dressed, undressed and keeping their cubby area organized with all their snow gear.

Promethean Board

As your child may have told you, we were lucky enough to receive a Promethean Board for our classroom last week. Students will be introduced to a variety of interactive math and literacy activities. This week students worked co-operatively with classmates using the Promethean Board to practice Ten Frames Skills.
